COURSE MATERIAL
The Young Speakers Programme is designed to provide instruction on presenting speeches and to provide theoretical knowledge on the many types of speeches and speaking opportunities. It is run in a Club structure. This way the members learn to speak in public in front of a live audience.
From the first session, the participants are taught to speak in front of a ‘live’ audience. Speaking cannot be learned out of a book, it must be practised in a learn by doing environment for permanent results.
The programme includes learning prepared speeches, speech evaluations or semi-prepared speeches, and impromptu speeches. The peer speech evaluations are an important component of the course. This is the skill where the participant is able to review a live speech, review it against the objectives of the speech assignment and offer some advice on how to improve. The evaluator must learn the components of speaking to offer the advice and so learn the theory. This is a very powerful tool.
The components learned are:
1. Preparing a Speech
2. Steps in Preparing a Speech
3. Speech Structure
4. Eye Contact
5. Body language and Gestures
6. Vocal Variety
7. Ums and Ahs
8. Speech Note
9. What Audiences Like
10. Getting off to a great start
11. Practicing the Speech
12. Impromptu Speaking
13. Speech Impacters
14. Visual Aids
15. Good Speech Attributes
16. Being the Toastmaster / Introducing the Speaker
The Club programme is held once a week or once every two weeks, which can change depending on Club member requirements and number of participants. Each meeting lasts for about 2 hours and is best run in the early evening or morning to ensure maximum attendance by participants.
There is a lot of preparation for each meeting and this cannot be underestimated. We encourage participants to postpone any other commitments for the starting period. However, the participants can graduate from YOUNG SPEAKERS INC by completing a minimum standard.
The participants will receive a workbook to prepare with and work out of. There are 5 speaking assignments and many other assignments, such as Evaluator, Chairman and Timer.
Speaking Assignments objectives are related to,
1. Ice Breaker.
2. Organising Your Speech.
3. Voice Speech.
4. Gestures Speech.
5. Motivation Speech.
The programme is run in a meeting style, as we have found the business meeting style is very conducive to the speaker audience relationship that many participants are bound to encounter eventually.
